wordpress v. blogger

Posted by Bartleby on October 24, 2007

All of my last several blogs were on blogger. I really liked the flexibility and integration of blogger but absolutely hated the available templates. I spent a ton of time customizing blogger templates just to make them look presentable or somewhat unique. Blogger has been the popular host for many years but now wordpress is really picking up the pace. So I thought what the hell and made the switch over to wordpress. I like the presentation but I really hate a few things about it too including:

  • Not being able to edit templates w/o subscribing
  • Not being able to use java script in the sidebars (unless you subscribe to the editor i assume)
  • The taging/category system – it is used for searching throughout wordpress rather than organizing posts within your own blog. I much prefer bloggers system.
  • To upload more than 50mb you have to pay – or use a photo hosting site which isn’t as convenient
  • Not having a quick edit button to increase font size and type.

Over all though I like wordpress and am getting on to it. WordPress is far more sophisticated as far as design and editing if you pay to edit it or use it to host your own site. I especially like the availability of three column templates that look much nicer, cleaner and are more appealing. Plus I can log on to wordpress from work without being blocked by the firewall/filter like blogger is ;)

Purge dead blog urls

Posted by Bartleby on October 22, 2007

Blogger, WordPress, Typepad and the like have so many dead url’s occupied by dead bloggers. They need to purge all the blogs without recent postings in the last, say, 2 years and give the opt out option to the rat pack blogger who really wants to preserve his blog for archive purposes. We need to get all these claimed yet unused free blogging urls freed up. This is a solid example of a blog that needs deleted and freed up for the active blogger to claim.  Same goes for email, which I think hotmail already attempts to do. If you don’t log into your account for 6 months you lose it. I hate seeing a good blog url wasted because someone claimed it a few years ago yet failed to post even once. Because reserving a blog url such as this one is free there is no disincentive, there is little care in the world if one hordes a blog url without posting. Free up these good addresses so people aren’t forced to throw numbers on the end.

Drudge is a frickin headline writer,

Posted by Bartleby on October 19, 2007

not a blogger. He is often characterized as one of the first bloggers but that is simply not the case. He breaks stories via the stories. He writes headlines coded to html links to news stories. A sweet job, but not totally not a blogger. He is an opinion news aggregater. Often times he ignores or misses significant news stories and his news selection is sometimes odd. Anyway, to call him a blogger illustrates one’s own ignorance and archaic grasp of the times.
